Art 6: Slip and Score Competition

Students in Art 6 are learning about clay. They have learned how to wedge clay, using the “ram’s head method” and how to use the slab roller.

Do you know why artists wedge clay? There are two reasons.

  1. To get the air bubbles out
  2. To get the molecules to start moving around

Yesterday students learned how to slip and score. This is the method that ceramic artists use to attach pieces of clay. In honor of this new technique, I challenged students to build the tallest structure possible. As they used up their clay I gave them more.

Here are some of the photos of the building process.
