Artist of the Week: Brian Dettmer

 

Brian Dettmer has been called a “Book Surgeon.” I remember coming across his work in blogs as I was looking for reference images of Altered Books. I was then fortunate enough to see his work in person at the Memorial Art Gallery exhibit titled, “Extreme Materials 2.” It appears to be painstaking work. Listen in the video below to what he says about the book being the artifact and how the art is the excavation process.
