Group of Seven

Mrs. Ragan, one of our Lower and Middle School French teachers has traditionally done a project with her class on the Group of Seven. This ties into the Pathfinder trip which I also wrote about with the Nature Dots and the Goldsworthy (2012, 2011) project. Mrs. Ragan assigns her students a project while they are on the trip to draw en plein air. This year I offered to demonstrate and give some tips on sketching. Sadly, it was quite rainy on campus so we had to use photo references. We talked about how drawing is more about seeing and looking than actually drawing. Students looked for and traced shapes in the landscape with their fingers. Then they used vine charcoal and white charcoal pencils on a neutral surface to show value. They experimented with direction of light and atmospheric perspective.
