Haida Printmaking

For this lesson we focused on the 5th grade science curriculum. At the time they were studying the ocean. We all chose an ocean creature and created a plate to print from. We also looked at the artwork of the North West Natives, specifically the Haida people. My students were attentive to the kinds of details and designs found in their woodworking and fabric design. Lastly, we explored the idea of editions and how when reduction printing you can make as many copies as you like. While the students worked I played episodes of Planet Earth, adding to the ocean theme of the room.
